A simple guide to boats, harbours, travel times and tips, so your trip to the Gilis is easy and stress-free.

The Gili Islands are only a short boat ride from Bali, but many travellers feel a little lost when planning the trip. Which harbour should you choose? How long does it take? Is the sea rough? Do you need to book early? Don’t worry. In this guide, we answer the questions travellers ask us most often, in plain and simple words.

The Short Answer

The easiest way to get from Bali to the Gili Islands is by fast boat. It takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on where you leave from and which island you are going to. Most boats leave in the morning, and you can book your ticket online before you arrive.

Which Gili Island Should You Choose?

There are three Gili Islands. Each one has its own vibe:

  • Gili Trawangan (Gili T): The biggest and liveliest island. Lots of restaurants, bars, dive shops and beach clubs. Good for social travellers and night owls.
  • Gili Meno: The quietest island. Calm beaches, a peaceful atmosphere, and a perfect spot for couples or anyone who wants to slow down.
  • Gili Air: A nice balance between the two. Relaxed, with good cafes and a friendly local feel.

Not sure yet? Many people visit more than one island. Local boats run between the Gilis every day, so it’s easy to hop around.

Where Do the Boats Leave From?

There are several departure points in Bali. The best one for you depends on where you are staying.

Padang Bai (East Bali)

This is the most popular harbour for Gili trips. It has the most departures during the day, and the crossing is usually short. It’s a good choice if you stay in Ubud, Candidasa, or anywhere in the east.

Sanur

Sanur is great if you are staying in Sanur, Denpasar, Kuta, Seminyak, or near the airport. You don’t need to travel far to the harbour, and there are regular morning departures.

Serangan (near Benoa)

Serangan is close to the south of Bali and the airport. It works well for travellers in Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, or Nusa Dua who want an easier ride to the harbour.

Amed (East Coast)

Amed has fewer departures, but it’s perfect if you are already staying in the northeast of Bali and want to skip the long drive south.

How Long Does the Trip Take?

Travel time can change a little depending on the weather and sea conditions. Here is a rough guide:

FromTo Gili IslandsApprox. Boat Time
Padang BaiGili Trawangan / Meno / Air1.5 – 2 hours
SanurGili Trawangan / Meno / Air2 – 2.5 hours
SeranganGili Trawangan / Meno / Air2 – 2.5 hours
AmedGili Trawangan / Meno / Air2 – 2.5 hours

Don’t forget to add the time from your hotel to the harbour, plus check-in time before departure.

What Are Your Options for Getting There?

1. Fast Boat (Recommended)

This is the most popular and comfortable option. It’s quick, simple, and you can book it online. Most operators offer a ticket that includes the boat ride, and some also offer hotel pick-up from certain areas in Bali.

2. Public Ferry + Local Boat (Budget Option)

You can take the slow public ferry from Padang Bai to Lembar in Lombok, then travel by land to Bangsal Harbour, and finally take a small boat to the Gilis. It’s cheaper, but it’s a very long day and usually takes 8 hours or more. It’s only worth it if you have lots of time and a very tight budget.

3. Flight to Lombok + Boat

You can fly from Bali to Lombok, then take a transfer to Bangsal Harbour and a short boat to the Gilis. It’s not common, and it usually costs more and takes more steps than a direct fast boat.

How to Book Your Ticket

Booking is easy:

  1. Choose your departure harbour and your Gili island.
  2. Pick your travel date and time.
  3. Enter your name and contact details.
  4. Pay online and receive your e-ticket by email.
  5. Show the e-ticket at the harbour check-in counter.

We suggest booking at least a few days before your trip, especially during high season (July to September) and on public holidays. Morning boats fill up fast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to book in advance?

It’s not always required, but it’s strongly recommended. Seats can sell out, especially for popular morning departures. Booking early also gives you peace of mind.

What time should I arrive at the harbour?

Try to arrive 45 to 60 minutes before departure. You need time to check in, drop your luggage, and find your boat. Traffic in Bali can be unpredictable, so give yourself some extra time.

Will I get seasick?

It depends on the weather and on you. The Bali Strait and Lombok Strait can be bumpy at times, especially in the afternoon and during windy months. If you are sensitive, take seasickness medicine before you leave, sit near the middle of the boat, look at the horizon, and eat something light before you go.

What is the best time of day to travel?

Morning is usually the best. The sea is often calmer, the weather is nicer, and you have more time to enjoy the island when you arrive.

Can I bring big luggage?

Yes, in most cases. Luggage is stored on the boat. Still, it’s smart to pack light and keep your valuables, passport, medicine, and phone in a small bag with you. It’s also a good idea to put your important things in a waterproof bag, just in case.

Is there a hotel pick-up?

Some fast boat packages include pick-up from certain areas in Bali. Check the details when you book. If it’s not included, you can easily arrange a taxi or private driver to the harbour.

Can I travel with kids?

Yes, families travel to the Gilis all the time. Kids usually need their own ticket (or a small child fare, depending on age). Bring snacks, a hat, and a life jacket if you want extra comfort. Life jackets are on the boat, too.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Safety comes first. If the sea is too rough, boats can be delayed or cancelled. If that happens, you can usually reschedule to another time or date. That’s why it’s smart to avoid booking a very tight schedule on the same day as a flight.

Do I need to book my return trip too?

Yes, we recommend booking your return ticket early as well. You can often book a round trip in one go. This is the easiest way to be sure you can get back to Bali when you need to.

What happens when I arrive on the Gili Islands?

When the boat arrives, you will step off at the beach or harbour. There are no cars or motorbikes on the Gilis. You can walk, rent a bicycle, or take a cidomo (a small horse cart). Most hotels are close to the beach, so it’s easy to find your way.

Is there an island tax or entry fee?

Some fees may apply when you arrive, such as local port or island fees. Prices and rules can change, so please check the latest info before you travel.

Simple Packing List for Your Boat Trip

Handy Tips Before You Go

  • Don’t plan a flight on the same day. Give yourself a buffer in case of delays.
